The beginnings of animation: James Stuart Blackton
James Stuart Blackton (Sheffield, 1875 – Hollywood, 1945) was a director and producer of silent films. He founded the Vitagraph Studios and is considered the father of American animation. He began his professional career as an illustrator for the New York World newspaper. Blackton discovered the cinema when in 1896 he was sent to interview Thomas Edison in the public presentation of the Vitascope. In 1900 Blackton directs for Thomas Edison the silent film “The Enchanted Drawing”, which contains the first animated sequences in 35mm film.
Stop-motion
In 1906 the Vitagraph patented a new technique to animate inert objects, the stop-motion, also denominated like passage of crank or American movement. Stop-motion seeks to create the sensation of movement by arranging a series of successive still images. It is a technique used very often in animation both in the origins and today, used to provide movement to physical objects.
Humorous Phases of Funny Faces
Humorous Phases of Funny Faces is a silent film of James Stuart Blackton released in the year 1906, and perhaps his most outstanding work, in which is already used the technique of the crank step or stop-motion by which animated drawings done On a blackboard captured using a film that moves at 20 frames per second.
